Well there have been some new things going on in our household lately.

I still can't figure out this blog background thing so....sorry if it looks a little nuts!

Brynlee has Torticollis/Plagiocephaly. Simply explained Torticollis occurs when the muscles in one side of the neck are too short. It causes the child to be unable to turn/rotate their head in that direction. More often than not...it causes Plagiocephaly which is a flat spot on the back of their head. See pic above.

We wondered if she was developing a flat spot so I asked her pediatrician at her 4 month appointment about it. He is an older guy a.k.a. "old school". He said she did have a flat spot but that it would correct itself on its own. Fast forward a couple of weeks...Brynlee gets the flu and I haul her into the doctor to see if he can help her. The regular doctor was not there so she saw another pediatrician that worked in the clinic. Thank goodness! This doctor was much more into modern medicine and intervention and told us that she had torticollis/plagiocephaly and that she needed physical therapy and SOON....When an infant has this condition...you only have until 6 months to begin therapy or it becomes very difficult to treat without a helmet.

So needless to say I was slightly upset (okay I'm being nice here) with her regular pediatrician..I had asked him that exact question at her last check up!!!! This left us with only 5 weeks to start treatment!!!

She had her first therapy session yesterday. All went well. Luckily she doesn't have a severe case so most likely no helmet!!!!! Yeah!!! All we have to do is be very diligent about doing her neck stretches and head turns to help her neck muscle and lay her on her left side to correct the flat spot. Hopefully it continues to go well and should only take a few months.
